What Is Archaeology?

📋 What it is

Archaeology studies the past through what people left behind — objects, buildings and remains — not just written records.

🗣️ Coach says

History has two kinds of clues: what people WROTE and what people LEFT. Archaeology reads the second kind — a broken pot, a foundation, a seed — to learn about people who never wrote a word. Everything is evidence.

🧠 Memory hook

Archaeology reads what people LEFT, not just what they wrote.

😂 Giggle

Why did the archaeologist go broke?
Because their career was in ruins!

😲 Whoa!

Most of human history happened before writing was invented, so for most of the past archaeology is the ONLY way we can know anything.

🗺️ Choose your path through the dig. There’s no way to lose — a wrong turn just sends you back to try again.

🧪 Try it! (2 minutes)

Look at one everyday object near you and name what a future archaeologist might learn from it.

🤸 Brain break: Careful brush: gently “brush” away invisible dirt with slow fingers to reveal a buried clue.
