Paleontology & Fossils

📋 What it is

Paleontology studies ancient LIFE through fossils — the preserved remains or traces of long-dead plants and animals.

🗣️ Coach says

Archaeology studies ancient PEOPLE; paleontology studies ancient LIFE — dinosaurs, plants, early creatures — through fossils. A fossil is a message from deep time: a bone turned to stone, a footprint frozen in rock. Both fields read clues the same careful way.

🧠 Memory hook

Paleontology = ancient LIFE (fossils). Archaeology = ancient PEOPLE.

😂 Giggle

What did one fossil say to the other?
"I've got a bone to pick with you!"

😲 Whoa!

Most fossils form only when a creature is buried fast — which is why fossils are rare and every one is precious.

🗺️ Choose your path through the dig. There’s no way to lose — a wrong turn just sends you back to try again.

🧪 Try it! (2 minutes)

Name one thing that could become a fossil and one thing that almost never would.
