The Knight
📋 What it is
The shogi Knight jumps only FORWARD in two L-shapes and cannot move sideways or backward.
🗣️ Coach says
The shogi Knight leaps like a chess knight but ONLY forward — to one of just two squares (two ahead and one to a side). It can jump over pieces, but its forward-only limit means a Knight stuck deep in your own half is nearly useless until it advances.
🧠 Memory hook
Two forward L-jumps only. No sideways, no retreat.
😂 Giggle
Why is the Gold General everyone's most reliable friend?
Because it never turns its back — it can't promote!
😲 Whoa!
Because the Knight can only go forward, a Knight that reaches the last ranks with nowhere legal to jump MUST be promoted — the rules won't let it get stuck off the board.
✅ Quick check: How many squares can a shogi Knight move to, and in what direction?
Say your answer out loud first — then reveal.
Just two — both are forward L-jumps (two ahead, one to either side); it cannot move sideways or backward.
The shogi Knight is a forward-only, two-target jumper.
🧪 Try it! (2 minutes)
Place a Knight and mark its two forward L-targets. Notice how few options it has compared to a chess knight.
