Check threatens the King; you must escape it, and keeping the King safe (often in a "castle") is vital.

Attack the King and it's "check" — the opponent must get out of it by moving the King, blocking, or capturing the checker. Because shogi lets captured pieces come BACK into play (drops), the King is always in danger, so tucking it into a fortress of Generals (a "castle") early is crucial.
