Round 15 of 16

Opening Shapes & Castles

📋 What it is

A good opening develops the big pieces and builds a castle; "Static Rook" and "Ranging Rook" are the two great families.

🗣️ Coach says

Openings split into two big ideas: keep the Rook where it starts ("Static Rook") and attack down one side, or swing it across ("Ranging Rook") to attack from a flank. Either way you build a castle for your King first. Learning one castle (the Mino) and one plan sets you up for real games.

🧠 Memory hook

Static or Ranging Rook — pick a plan, and castle the King before you attack.

😂 Giggle

Why is shogi great for people who hate goodbyes?
No piece ever really leaves the game!

😲 Whoa!

The choice between Static and Ranging Rook is shogi's biggest strategic fork — whole books and rivalries are built around which family a player prefers.

✅ Quick check: What two things should a solid shogi opening accomplish?

Say your answer out loud first — then reveal.

🧪 Try it! (2 minutes)

Pick Static or Ranging Rook, build the Mino castle, and play your first five moves accordingly.

🤸 Brain break: Plan-and-fort: point your "rook" left or right, then wall up the King — plan then castle.
