Communication Strategies & Conflict Resolution
📋 What it is
When a group disagrees, calm communication — "I" statements, listening, finding common ground — resolves it fairly.
🗣️ Coach says
Every group hits disagreements. Resolving them calmly means using "I feel…" instead of blaming, LISTENING to the other side, and looking for COMMON GROUND you both want. The aim isn't to "win" — it's to keep the group working and everyone respected. This is a skill you can practise.
🧠 Memory hook
Conflict resolution = "I" statements + listen + find common ground. Aim to solve, not to win.
😂 Giggle
What did the paintbrush say to the canvas during the group project?
"I'm making my mark!"
😲 Whoa!
Starting a hard sentence with "I feel…" instead of "You always…" makes the other person far less defensive — a tiny word-swap that defuses arguments.
✅ Quick check: Why use an "I feel…" statement instead of "you always…" in a disagreement?
Say your answer out loud first — then reveal.
Because "I feel…" shares your side without blaming, so the other person is less defensive and you can solve the problem together.
"I" statements reduce defensiveness and keep the conversation solution-focused.
🧪 Try it! (2 minutes)
Turn "you never listen!" into an "I feel…" sentence — notice how much calmer it sounds.
