The single most common algebra error in classrooms is a "sign error" — a lost or wrong minus sign, not hard maths.
✅ Quick check: A student solved x − 4 = 10 as x = 6. What went wrong?
Say your answer out loud first — then reveal.
They subtracted instead of added; you ADD 4 to both sides, so x = 14.
To undo "− 4" you add 4; doing the wrong opposite is a classic slip.
🪄 Trick question: True or false: you can add 5 to just the left side of an equation.
Careful — think it through, then reveal.
False — you must add it to BOTH sides or the equation is no longer balanced.
Changing one side alone breaks the equality the equation depends on.
