Pattern Recognition
📋 What it is
A pattern is a repeating rule; spotting the rule lets you predict the next item and crack a locked sequence.
🗣️ Coach says
Escape rooms love sequence locks. The trick is never to guess the next item — find the RULE. In 3, 6, 12, 24 each number doubles; once you name “doubling,” the next lock digit is certain.
🧠 Memory hook
Don’t guess the next symbol — find the RULE, then the lock opens itself.
😂 Giggle
Why couldn't the escape room player open the door?
Because they couldn't find the key to success!
😲 Whoa!
Real escape rooms are designed around pattern locks precisely because your brain is SO good at spotting patterns — the fun is the “aha” when the rule clicks.
✅ Quick check: A lock shows 2, 6, 18, 54, ___. What’s next, and what’s the rule?
Say your answer out loud first — then reveal.
162 — each number is multiplied by 3; naming the rule (×3) makes the next digit certain.
A named rule turns the next term from a guess into a certainty.
🪄 Trick question: In 5, 10, 15, 22, is the rule “add 5”?
Careful — think it through, then reveal.
No — 15 to 22 is +7, so “add 5” breaks; a real pattern rule must fit EVERY step.
A pattern rule has to hold for all terms, not most.
🧪 Try it! (2 minutes)
Make a 4-symbol pattern lock for a friend and challenge them to find the RULE, not just the next item.
