Inhibitory Control
📋 What it is
Inhibitory control is the "brake" that lets you PAUSE an impulse and choose your response instead of reacting.
🗣️ Coach says
This is your mental brake pedal. When a notification pings or a fun distraction appears, inhibitory control is what lets you NOTICE the urge and pause before acting. It is a skill that grows with practice — a tiny "stop and breathe" gives your thinking brain a moment to catch up with your reacting brain.
🧠 Memory hook
Notice the urge → PAUSE → choose. The brake is a skill; it gets stronger with practice.
😂 Giggle
My working memory and I have a great relationship — it's just short-term.
😲 Whoa!
The famous "marshmallow" experiments studied exactly this pause-and-wait skill — and found it can be taught, not just born with.
✅ Quick check: A game notification pops up while you study. What does inhibitory control help you do?
Say your answer out loud first — then reveal.
Pause the urge to check it and choose to keep studying (or set it aside for later).
Inhibitory control lets you stop an impulse and pick your response.
🧪 Try it! (2 minutes)
Put your phone in another room for one homework block and notice each urge to check it — just notice, don’t judge.
