Calm & Regulation
📋 What it is
When big feelings flood in, the thinking brain goes offline — calming the body FIRST lets it come back.
🗣️ Coach says
Strong feelings are normal and okay. But when you’re "flooded", it is genuinely hard to think or focus — the body’s alarm is louder than the reasoning part. So the move is body-first: slow breaths, a short walk, a drink of water. Once the wave passes, THEN tackle the problem. You are not calming down to hide feelings; you are getting your thinking back.
🧠 Memory hook
Flooded? Calm the BODY first (slow breath, move, water). Thinking returns after the wave passes.
😂 Giggle
Cognitive flexibility is a lot like yoga for your brain — sometimes you just have to stretch your thinking.
😲 Whoa!
A slow breath out (longer than the breath in) actually signals your body’s "calm" system to switch on — it’s physical, not just "in your head".
✅ Quick check: You’re too upset to focus on a problem. What comes first?
Say your answer out loud first — then reveal.
Calm your body (slow breathing, a short break) — then your thinking brain can come back online.
Under strong emotion the reasoning brain is muffled; regulate the body first.
🧪 Try it! (2 minutes)
Try "box breathing": in for 4, hold 4, out for 4, hold 4 — three rounds — and notice your body settle.
