Many fossils come from ancient seas — shells, corals and sea creatures, even on today’s mountaintops.

A huge share of fossils are marine — ancient shellfish, corals, ammonites and fish. Sea creatures fossilise well because they sink into soft seabed mud that buries them fast. Amazingly, marine fossils turn up on mountaintops, proof that rock layers (and whole seas) have shifted over deep time.
