Only rare conditions preserve a fossil; taphonomy studies what happens between death and discovery.

Becoming a fossil is RARE — most dead things rot or get eaten with no trace. Taphonomy studies the journey from death to fossil: quick burial (mud, ash, tar) protects remains, and over ages minerals harden them. Understanding what preserves — and what’s missing — keeps scientists from being fooled.
