Misconceptions & Reasoning

📋 What it is

Common myths: “genes are destiny”, “GMOs are unnatural poison”, “we use only a few genes”.

🗣️ Coach says

Genetics has stubborn myths. Genes aren’t destiny — environment and choices matter hugely. GMOs aren’t automatically dangerous (all breeding changes genes; safety depends on the specific case). And you use far more of your genome than people assume. A good scientist checks claims against evidence.

🧠 Memory hook

Genes ≠ destiny. GMO ≠ automatically bad. Check claims against evidence.

😂 Giggle

Why did the phenotype feel misunderstood?
"People only see what I look like, never my genotype underneath!"

😲 Whoa!

Humans have about 20,000 genes — fewer than a grape plant — proving that gene COUNT isn’t what makes an organism complex.

✅ Quick check: True or false: “Your genes completely determine who you become.”

Say your answer out loud first — then reveal.

🧪 Try it! (2 minutes)

Find a genetics claim (“it’s in my genes”) and ask: how much is genes, how much is choices and environment?

🤸 Brain break: Myth-buster: cross arms “X” for the myth, then thumbs-up for the evidence.
