Mission 2 of 16

Tricky Syllables

📋 What it is

Some words hide syllables — silent letters and blends can fool the count.

🗣️ Coach says

Not every word counts cleanly. "Chocolate" sounds like 2 but is often 3 (choc-o-late). Silent e usually adds no beat ("cake" = 1). Trust your EARS, not the letters, and say it slowly.

🧠 Memory hook

Count SOUNDS, not letters. Silent "e" usually adds no beat. Say it slowly to hear.

😂 Giggle

Why did the poet clap while writing?
To count the syllables in each line!

😲 Whoa!

The word "queue" is five letters but just ONE syllable — four of its letters are silent.

✅ Quick check: How many syllables in "chocolate" when you say it slowly?

Say your answer out loud first — then reveal.

🪄 Trick question: Does the silent "e" in "cake" add a syllable?

Careful — think it through, then reveal.

🧪 Try it! (2 minutes)

Say "every", "family" and "different" slowly. Do they have more syllables than they look?
