Similes, metaphors and personification compare things to create vivid images.

Figurative language makes writing sparkle. A simile compares with "like/as" ("quiet as a mouse"). A metaphor says one thing IS another ("the sky is a canvas"). Personification gives objects human traits. All create pictures.
