Mission 5 of 16

Crop Science & Plant Growth

📋 What it is

Crops need light, water, air, nutrients and the right temperature — and each has ideal conditions.

🗣️ Coach says

Crops are plants grown for food, and each has needs: LIGHT for photosynthesis, WATER, air (CO₂), NUTRIENTS from soil, and a suitable temperature. Farmers match crops to their climate and give them what they lack. Understanding how plants grow lets farmers boost yields and troubleshoot problems.

🧠 Memory hook

Crops need light + water + air + nutrients + right temperature. Match crop to climate; supply what’s missing.

😂 Giggle

The lettuce won the race because it was a head from the very start.

😲 Whoa!

Corn can grow astonishingly fast in summer — on a hot day a corn plant can grow several centimetres, and a whole field has been said to make faint crackling sounds as it stretches.

✅ Quick check: Name three things a crop needs to grow well.

Say your answer out loud first — then reveal.

🧪 Try it! (2 minutes)

Grow a bean in a cup by a window vs in a dark cupboard — light makes the difference in days.

🤸 Brain break: Grow-up: crouch as a seed, then rise reaching for "sunlight" — a crop growing.
