Radiation carries heat as electromagnetic waves — it needs no material and crosses empty space.

Radiation is the odd one out: it needs no particles at all. Hot objects give off infrared (and visible) electromagnetic waves that carry energy through empty space. That’s how the Sun’s heat crosses 150 million km of vacuum to reach you, and how a campfire warms your face without touching it.
