Many illusions start with light bending and bouncing — the same optics that makes a straw look "broken" in water.

A lot of illusions begin with LIGHT playing tricks. Light bends (refracts) when it passes into water or glass, making a straw look broken; it bounces off mirrors to place images where objects aren’t. Your eyes faithfully report the light they receive — the "trick" is that light itself took a bent path.
