Understanding Disability & Ability
📋 What it is
Disability is a natural part of human diversity — and people describe it in different ways (person-first OR identity-first).
🗣️ Coach says
Disability is simply one of the many ways humans vary — like height or language. How people want to be described differs: some prefer "person-first" ("a person with autism"), others prefer "identity-first" ("an autistic person"). The respectful move is to FOLLOW the person’s own preference, and when unsure, just ask kindly.
🧠 Memory hook
Disability = human diversity. Person-first OR identity-first — follow the person’s OWN preference.
😂 Giggle
Universal Design isn't just good design — it's design that gives everyone a seat at the table.
Sometimes literally.
😲 Whoa!
Over 1 in 6 people worldwide has some form of disability — it’s one of the largest and most diverse communities there is.
✅ Quick check: If you’re unsure whether someone prefers "person-first" or "identity-first" language, what’s best?
Say your answer out loud first — then reveal.
Follow their stated preference — and if you don’t know it, ask respectfully.
Preferences vary within the community, so the respectful default is to ask and follow.
🧪 Try it! (2 minutes)
Notice how a person or character describes themselves, and use their words back. When unsure, ask.
