Mountains form mainly where plates collide and crust folds or faults upward; then water, ice and wind slowly carve them.

Mountains are built UP by plates colliding, then worn DOWN by weather. That tug-of-war — building versus wearing away — shapes every landform you see. A jagged young mountain and a smooth old hill are the same story at different ages.
