Air cools as it rises over a mountain, dropping rain on the windward side; the far (leeward) side stays dry — a rain shadow.

Here’s a geography magic trick: one side of a mountain is a rainforest and the other is a desert. Air climbing the mountain cools and dumps its rain going up; by the time it comes down the far side it’s dry. Same mountain, two worlds.
