The first "numbers" were TALLY marks — one scratch per thing counted — long before written digits existed.

Counting is older than writing. People first kept track with tallies: one notch, one sheep. Later, cultures grouped tallies (fives, tens) to read big counts faster — the seed of a NUMBER SYSTEM. Understanding that a number system is just an agreed way to WRITE quantity helps every later idea, from base-10 to binary.
