Indian mathematicians treated ZERO as a real number with its own rules, and gave us the digits 0–9 we use today.

This is the birthplace of the numbers on your keyboard. Indian scholars like Brahmagupta wrote the rules for zero — what happens when you add or subtract it — and developed place-value with the digits 0–9. Traders carried this "Hindu-Arabic" system across the world because it made arithmetic so much easier than tallies or letters.
