Mission 12 of 16

Outbreak Investigation & Epidemiology

📋 What it is

Epidemiologists are "disease detectives" who track how illnesses spread through populations.

🗣️ Coach says

Epidemiology studies disease in whole populations. When an outbreak hits, "disease detectives" trace who got sick, where, and how it spread — mapping cases to find the source (a contaminated well, a food, a contact). This detective work stops outbreaks and shaped modern public health.

🧠 Memory hook

Epidemiology = disease detectives. Trace WHO/WHERE/HOW it spread → find the source → stop the outbreak.

😂 Giggle

Why did the knee go to the clinic?
Because it was feeling a little joint pain!

😲 Whoa!

Modern epidemiology was born in 1854 when Dr John Snow traced a London cholera outbreak to a single contaminated water pump — and stopped it by removing the pump handle.

✅ Quick check: What does an epidemiologist do during a disease outbreak?

Say your answer out loud first — then reveal.

🧪 Try it! (2 minutes)

Trace an imaginary "cold outbreak" in a class: who sat near whom? Mapping spread finds the source.
