Mission 5 of 16

Negation & Direction

📋 What it is

Some prefixes flip meaning or point a direction: un-/dis-/non- = not, re- = again/back, sub- = under, trans- = across, pre- = before.

🗣️ Coach says

These prefixes are steering wheels. "un-" reverses a word (do → undo), "re-" repeats it (play → replay), "trans-" carries it across (atlantic → transatlantic). Small part, big turn.

🧠 Memory hook

un/dis = not · re = again · sub = under · trans = across · pre = before.

😂 Giggle

Why did "chrono" always run late?
It could never stop thinking about time!

😲 Whoa!

"Submarine" is literally "under-sea" (sub + marine) — the prefix tells you exactly where it goes.

✅ Quick check: What does the prefix "re-" add to the word "build" in "rebuild"?

Say your answer out loud first — then reveal.

🧪 Try it! (2 minutes)

Add "un-", "re-", and "pre-" to "view" and say what each new word means.

🤸 Brain break: Reverse-walk: take a step forward for "pro-", a step back for "re-".
