Morpheme Families
📋 What it is
Words that share a root form a family with related meanings: from "spect" (look) come inspect, respect, spectator, spectacle, perspective.
🗣️ Coach says
Once you meet one family member, you have met them all. Seeing "aud" (hear) in "audience" instantly warns you it hides in audio, audible, auditorium. Families make vocabulary grow in bunches.
🧠 Memory hook
Same root = a word family. Learn one member, recognize the rest.
😂 Giggle
What did "spect" say at the eye doctor?
"I was made to look!"
😲 Whoa!
The "aqua" family (water) includes aquarium, aquatic, aqueduct, and even "aqualung" — Jacques Cousteau coined that last one.
✅ Quick check: Name two other words in the family of the root "port" (carry), besides "transport".
Say your answer out loud first — then reveal.
Any two of: portable, import, export, porter, portfolio — all built on "port" = carry.
Grouping words by shared root multiplies how many words one root teaches you.
🧪 Try it! (2 minutes)
Collect four members of the "graph/gram" (write) family and check each involves writing.
