What Is a System?
📋 What it is
A system is a set of parts that work together to do something no single part could do alone.
🗣️ Coach says
A system is any group of parts that connect and work TOGETHER toward a purpose — a bicycle, a body, a school, an ecosystem. The magic is that the whole does something none of the parts can do alone. Spotting the parts, the connections, and the purpose is the first step of systems thinking.
🧠 Memory hook
System = parts + connections + a purpose. The WHOLE does what no single part can alone.
😂 Giggle
Why did the feedback loop go to therapy?
It kept reinforcing its own problems!
😲 Whoa!
A single ant is almost helpless, but an ant COLONY can build bridges, farm fungus and cool its nest — the system does what no ant could dream of alone.
✅ Quick check: What makes a group of parts a "system"?
Say your answer out loud first — then reveal.
The parts connect and work together toward a purpose, doing something no single part could alone.
A system is defined by connected parts serving a shared purpose.
🧪 Try it! (2 minutes)
Pick something (a bike, a body) and name its parts, how they connect, and its purpose — that’s a system.
