Optics is all around you. The sky is blue because air scatters blue light most; sunsets glow red because low sun-light travels through more air; rainbows come from raindrop refraction; a mirage is light bending over hot air. Once you know the rules, nature’s light shows make sense.

The sky is blue for the same reason sunsets are red — air scatters blue light away; at sunset the light travels so far through air that mostly red is left to reach you.
