Area-of-Effect Geometry
📋 What it is
Spells and blasts cover shapes on the grid — circles, cones, lines — and geometry tells you exactly which squares they hit.
🗣️ Coach says
A fireball is geometry with a bang. An area-of-effect (AoE) spell covers a shape — a circle, cone or line — and you use geometry to work out exactly which squares it hits. Place it well and you catch three enemies; badly and you hit a wall.
🧠 Memory hook
AoE = a shape on the grid (circle/cone/line). Geometry = which squares get hit.
😂 Giggle
Why is the d20 the most popular dice at the party?
Because it always brings 20 sides to every story!
😲 Whoa!
A well-placed circular blast can hit several enemies at once, while a badly-aimed one might catch only empty squares — geometry decides.
✅ Quick check: How does geometry help a player use an “area-of-effect” spell well?
Say your answer out loud first — then reveal.
The spell covers a shape (circle, cone, line) on the grid; geometry tells you exactly which squares it hits, so you can place it to catch the most enemies.
AoE shapes are real applied geometry in a fun context.
🧪 Try it! (2 minutes)
Draw a small circle over a grid — count how many squares it covers.
