Describing the Setting
📋 What it is
Vivid description uses the senses — sight, sound, smell — to make a place feel real in the players’ imagination.
🗣️ Coach says
A game master paints with words. Instead of “you enter a room,” say “a cold, damp cave drips in the dark, and something skitters just out of sight.” Using the senses makes players SEE and FEEL the world. Description is the scenery.
🧠 Memory hook
Use the senses (sight, sound, smell) to make a place come alive.
😂 Giggle
Why did the wizard's fireball miss?
Because the area-of-effect was a no-effect zone!
😲 Whoa!
Just two or three sensory details — a smell, a sound, a texture — are usually enough to make players vividly imagine a whole scene.
✅ Quick check: How does using the senses help describe a setting in a game?
Say your answer out loud first — then reveal.
Sensory details (what you see, hear, smell, feel) make the place vivid and real in players’ imaginations, instead of a flat, plain description.
Sensory description is a core, transferable writing skill.
