📋 What it is
Harder texts hide the clue further away or signal it with a contrast word like "unlike", "however", or "instead".
🗣️ Coach says
Sometimes the clue isn’t next door — it’s a contrast. "Unlike his cheerful sister, Sam was morose" tells you "morose" is the opposite of cheerful. Hunt for the signal word.
🧠 Memory hook
Contrast words (unlike, but, however) flip the clue to the OPPOSITE meaning.
😂 Giggle
Why do homophones make terrible friends?
Because they sound the same but always mean different things!
😲 Whoa!
One little word like "however" can completely reverse the meaning of everything that comes after it.
