Mission 8 of 16

Theme & Central Message

📋 What it is

A theme is the big life lesson a story explores — like friendship, courage, or fairness.

🗣️ Coach says

The theme is bigger than the plot. The plot is WHAT happens; the theme is what it MEANS about life. Ask “what does this story say about people or the world?” Themes are usually one or two words plus a lesson.

🧠 Memory hook

Plot = what happens. Theme = what it means about life. Look for the lesson.

😂 Giggle

Why did the autobiography feel so self-centered?
Because it was always talking about itself!

😲 Whoa!

The same theme (like “good vs evil”) shows up in stories across every culture and century — themes are how stories talk to each other.

✅ Quick check: A character shares their lunch and gains a friend. Plot or theme: “kindness builds friendship”?

Say your answer out loud first — then reveal.

🧪 Try it! (2 minutes)

Name a story you know and state its theme in the form “____ can lead to ____” (e.g. “courage can lead to change”).
