For a “chickens and cows” problem, a smart guess you then adjust can find the answer faster than algebra.

Classic problem: “Chickens and cows have 8 heads and 22 legs — how many of each?” You can GUESS (say 4 each = 24 legs, too many), then ADJUST (swap a cow for a chicken to lose 2 legs). Guess-check-adjust is a real strategy, not cheating.

Engineers and scientists use “guess and adjust” (called iteration) to solve problems too hard for a direct formula — from rocket paths to weather forecasts.
✅ Quick check: 8 heads, 22 legs (chickens=2 legs, cows=4). Guess 4 cows/4 chickens = 24 legs. Now adjust.
Say your answer out loud first — then reveal.
✏️ Check your work Plug your final counts back into BOTH totals — do the heads add up AND the legs add up? If either misses, make one more swap.
Too many legs by 2 — swap one cow for a chicken (−2 legs) → 3 cows, 5 chickens = 22 legs. ✓
Each swap changes the legs by a known amount, so you adjust toward the target.

Try “6 heads, 16 legs.” Guess 3 and 3, count legs, and adjust one swap at a time to hit 16.
