The riddle

The Exeter Book, copied in England in the late 900s and still kept at Exeter Cathedral, holds about ninety riddles written as Old English poems.

One thing to hold: A riddle that speaks as the thing itself: “I am …”, and you say what it is.

Why it matters: A riddle is a small poem that makes you look at an ordinary thing a new way.

What we don’t know: The book never gives the answers. Scholars still argue over some of them.
