Mission 11 of 16

Human-Robot Interaction

📋 What it is

Robots that work with people must be safe, predictable, and easy to understand and control.

🗣️ Coach says

When robots share space with people — helping in hospitals, homes, or shops — how they INTERACT matters as much as what they do. Good design makes them SAFE (they stop if you're near), PREDICTABLE (you can tell what they'll do), and easy to control. A powerful robot that surprises people is a dangerous one.

🧠 Memory hook

Safe, predictable, easy to understand. A robot around people must never surprise them.

😂 Giggle

Why did the gyroscope get dizzy?
Because the robot kept spinning around in circles!

😲 Whoa!

Some helper robots are deliberately designed to move SLOWLY and pause before acting — not because they must, but so nearby people always feel safe and in control.

✅ Quick check: Name one quality a robot that works near people must have.

Say your answer out loud first — then reveal.

🧪 Try it! (2 minutes)

Design one safety rule for a home helper robot (e.g. "stop if someone is within one metre"). Explain why.

🤸 Brain break: Slow-and-clear: move a hand slowly and pause — predictable, safe robot motion.
