Step 5: Re-engaging
📋 What it is
Re-engaging is gently reconnecting after a repair — getting back to normal, at the other person’s pace.
🗣️ Coach says
Repair isn’t finished at "sorry" — you reconnect. Re-engaging means returning to normal interaction gently, and letting the other person set the pace (they may need a little time). Pushing too fast ("we’re fine now, right?!") can re-open the hurt. Patience here is part of the repair.
🧠 Memory hook
After repair, RECONNECT gently — at THEIR pace. Rushing "we’re fine now?" can re-open the hurt.
😂 Giggle
Why did the cool-down come before the conversation?
Because it's hard to repair anything while you're still flooded with big feelings!
😲 Whoa!
Trust after a rupture usually returns gradually, like a bridge being rebuilt plank by plank — not all at once.
✅ Quick check: After an apology, your friend still seems a little distant. What’s the re-engaging move?
Say your answer out loud first — then reveal.
Reconnect gently and give them time — let them set the pace rather than rushing it.
Re-engaging works best at the hurt person’s pace; patience protects the repair.
🧪 Try it! (2 minutes)
Notice how a character reconnects after a fight. Was it rushed or gentle? What worked?
