Middle Ground
📋 What it is
Mean (add ÷ count), median (the middle value), and mode (the most common) are three different "averages" — and they can disagree.
🗣️ Coach says
When someone quotes an "average", ask WHICH one. With outliers, the mean lies and the median tells the truth. Choosing the flattering average is the oldest trick in the stats book — do not fall for it, and do not use it.
🧠 Memory hook
Mean = add-÷-count · median = the middle · mode = most common. With outliers, trust the median.
😂 Giggle
Why did the clickbait headline get benched?
It over-promised and under-delivered!
😲 Whoa!
A famous example: put a billionaire in a room of 10 people and the MEAN income is millions — but the MEDIAN barely moves. Same room, two "averages".
✅ Quick check: For the views 2, 3, 3, 4, 88, which is more typical — the mean or the median, and what is it?
Say your answer out loud first — then reveal.
The median (3) — the 88 outlier drags the mean up to 20, which no post is near.
Knowing when the median beats the mean protects you from a number that one extreme distorts.
🧪 Try it! (2 minutes)
Compute mean, median, and mode for 4, 4, 5, 6, 21 and say which is most honest.
