Mission 3 of 16

Animal Communication & Bioacoustics

📋 What it is

Bioacoustics studies the sounds animals make and hear — many use pitches and signals humans can't perceive.

🗣️ Coach says

Bioacoustics is the science of ANIMAL sound. Animals use sound to find food, warn of danger and talk to each other — and many hear pitches we can't. Dogs hear far higher than we do; some whales "sing" for hours across whole oceans. Studying these sounds tells us how animals live.

🧠 Memory hook

Bioacoustics = the study of animal sound. Many animals hear pitches humans can't.

😂 Giggle

Why was the thunder sound always in trouble?
It kept making a scene in the soundscape!

😲 Whoa!

Some whale songs are so low and powerful they travel hundreds of kilometres underwater — a message across an entire ocean, sung in sound.

✅ Quick check: What does the science of "bioacoustics" study?

Say your answer out loud first — then reveal.

🧪 Try it! (2 minutes)

Think of an animal sound you know — is it a warning, a call for a mate, or "I'm over here"? Sound has a job.

🤸 Brain break: Ocean-breath: breathe in slow and deep like a whale surfacing, then a long calm breath out.
