Music Visualisers
📋 What it is
Visualisers, oscilloscopes and spectrograms turn invisible vibration into pictures you can read.
🗣️ Coach says
Sound is vibration you can't see, so scientists built tools to SEE it. An oscilloscope draws the wave: taller for louder, more tightly packed for higher pitch. A spectrogram maps pitches from low to high over time. Chladni sprinkled sand on a vibrating plate and the sand drew the pattern. A music app's bouncing bars do the same thing live, one bar per band of pitches.
🧠 Memory hook
Visualiser: louder → taller wave · higher → waves packed closer · spectrogram = pitch map over time.
😂 Giggle
Why did the red line produce a loud sound?
Because it was drawn with high intensity!
😲 Whoa!
In 2008 researchers played back a drawing of a voice made in 1860 by the phonautograph, a machine that could draw sound but never play it.
✅ Quick check: On an oscilloscope, how does a louder sound look different?
Say your answer out loud first — then reveal.
The wave is taller (bigger amplitude); a higher pitch would instead pack the waves closer together.
Height shows loudness; spacing shows pitch.
🧪 Try it! (2 minutes)
Watch a visualiser while you clap, then hum. Which one makes a sudden spike, and which one makes a steady wave?
