Watch a scene with the sound off and it often goes flat. Sound designers choose what you hear the way a camera chooses what you see: Foley artists perform the footsteps, a leitmotif tells you a character is near, a sound bridge pulls you into the next scene. Studies of film music find the same clip reads as friendly or threatening depending on the music played with it.
