Mantle Convection
📋 What it is
Heat from deep inside Earth drives slow convection currents in the mantle — the engine moving the plates.
🗣️ Coach says
What actually moves the plates? Deep heat. The mantle’s rock is so hot it slowly flows: hotter rock rises, cooler rock sinks, creating giant CONVECTION currents — the same loop as a heated pot, but in solid-ish rock over millions of years. These currents drag the plates along above them.
🧠 Memory hook
Mantle convection = deep heat makes rock slowly circulate (hot rises, cool sinks). It’s the engine that moves plates.
😂 Giggle
Why did the Pangaea reunion get canceled?
The continents drifted apart!
😲 Whoa!
The heat driving mantle convection comes partly from radioactive elements deep in Earth slowly decaying — the planet is, in a sense, nuclear-heated from within.
✅ Quick check: What force actually drives the tectonic plates to move?
Say your answer out loud first — then reveal.
Mantle convection — deep heat makes the mantle rock slowly circulate, dragging the plates along above.
Convection currents in the mantle move the plates.
🧪 Try it! (2 minutes)
Watch a heated pot of water churn — hot rising, cool sinking; the mantle does this in slow rock.
