Shelter Building Basics

📋 What it is

A good shelter protects you from wind, rain and cold — the first priority for staying safe outdoors.

🗣️ Coach says

Staying warm and dry is a top outdoor priority. A shelter — a tent, a tarp, or a natural spot — blocks wind and rain and traps warmth. The keys are: pick a safe, dry, level spot (not under dead branches or in a dip that floods), and keep it small so your body heat warms it. Always camp with a trusted adult.

🧠 Memory hook

Shelter = block wind/rain + trap warmth. Safe, dry, level spot; keep it small. Always with an adult.

😂 Giggle

Why did the hiker bring a ladder on the trail?
Because they heard the trail had a high point!

😲 Whoa!

A small shelter is warmer than a big one — your body heat fills a snug space quickly, while a large one stays cold, which is why survival shelters are built just big enough to fit you.

✅ Quick check: Why is a SMALL shelter usually warmer than a large one?

Say your answer out loud first — then reveal.

🧪 Try it! (2 minutes)

Build a "shelter" with a blanket over two chairs — notice a smaller gap traps your warmth faster.
