Mission 2 of 16

Navigation & Orienteering

📋 What it is

Navigation uses a map, compass and landmarks to know where you are and find your way.

🗣️ Coach says

Not getting lost is a core outdoor skill. A MAP shows the land, a COMPASS shows direction (the needle points north), and LANDMARKS (a peak, a river) fix your position. Orienteering combines them: line the map to north, spot landmarks, and plan your route. The Sun and stars can guide you too.

🧠 Memory hook

Map + compass (needle = north) + landmarks = know where you are + find your way.

😂 Giggle

What do you call a bear with no teeth?
A gummy bear!

😲 Whoa!

A compass needle points north because Earth itself is a giant magnet — the same mantle-and-core science that moves continents also steers your compass.

✅ Quick check: Which direction does a compass needle point, and why is that useful?

Say your answer out loud first — then reveal.

🧪 Try it! (2 minutes)

Find north with a compass (or a compass app), then name what’s to your east, south and west.

🤸 Brain break: Point-north: hold an arm out steady as "the needle" and turn your body around it.
