Metacognition
📋 What it is
Thinking about your own thinking — planning before, checking during, and reflecting after you learn.
🗣️ Coach says
Metacognition is being the coach of your own brain. Before you start you ask "what’s my plan?", in the middle you ask "is this working?", and at the end you ask "what would I do differently?"
🧠 Memory hook
META = above. You float ABOVE your own thinking and watch it, like a coach watching the game from up high.
😂 Giggle
Why did the plan check on itself halfway through?
Because thinking about your thinking is what metacognition is all about!
😲 Whoa!
Just asking yourself "did I get that?" after reading a page can double how much you remember — because it turns reading into checking.
✅ Quick check: You just read a page and understood nothing. What does a metacognitive learner DO next?
Say your answer out loud first — then reveal.
Notice they’re lost and change the plan (re-read slower, chunk it, or ask why) — not just turn the page.
Catching "this isn’t working" is the whole skill; the fix comes after the noticing.
🧪 Try it! (2 minutes)
Before your next homework, say ONE sentence out loud: "My plan is ___." After, say "Did the plan work? ___." That’s a full metacognition loop in 20 seconds.
