Sleep & Rest
📋 What it is
Kids and teens need about 9–12 hours of sleep — it’s when the body grows and the brain files away learning.
🗣️ Coach says
Sleep isn’t "doing nothing" — it’s when your body repairs and grows and your brain sorts the day’s learning into memory. Most 9–14-year-olds need roughly 9–12 hours. A wind-down routine and screens-off before bed help a lot, because screen light tells your brain it’s still daytime. Good sleep boosts mood, focus, and even sports.
🧠 Memory hook
You need ~9–12 hours. Sleep = growth + memory filing. Screens-off before bed helps you fall asleep.
😂 Giggle
I'm a plate that replaced the pyramid, I have five sections, and I show you how much of each food group to eat. What am I?
MyPlate!
😲 Whoa!
Your brain actually "washes" itself during deep sleep, clearing out waste — one reason you feel foggy when short on sleep.
✅ Quick check: Why is sleep important for learning?
Say your answer out loud first — then reveal.
During sleep the brain files the day’s learning into memory (and the body repairs and grows).
Memory consolidation happens largely during sleep, so rest cements learning.
🪄 Trick question: Can you "catch up" on lost sleep and be totally fine?
Careful — think it through, then reveal.
Only partly — some catch-up helps, but regular good sleep matters more than weekend catch-up.
Consistent sleep beats a boom-and-bust pattern; catch-up only partially repays the debt.
🧪 Try it! (2 minutes)
Try a screens-off wind-down 30 minutes before bed tonight and notice how you feel falling asleep.
