Puzzle Traps
📋 What it is
Common traps: assuming the FIRST reading of a word is right, and grinding instead of looking for the shortcut.
🗣️ Coach says
Puzzles punish two habits: taking a word’s obvious meaning without question, and doing brute work when a clever shortcut exists. When stuck, the fix is usually to STOP and re-read, not to try harder the same way.
🧠 Memory hook
Stuck? Don’t push harder — re-read and question your first assumption.
😲 Whoa!
Puzzle setters count on your assumptions — the “hardest” riddles are often easy once you drop the one word you misread.
✅ Quick check: You’ve tried a riddle 10 times the same way and failed. Best next move?
Say your answer out loud first — then reveal.
Re-read it and question an assumption (which word’s meaning did you take for granted?) — not just try harder the same way.
Repeating a failed approach rarely works; changing the assumption does.
🪄 Trick question: If a puzzle has a shortcut, does trying every option anyway ever pay off?
Careful — think it through, then reveal.
It can get the answer, but slowly — spotting the shortcut is the real skill, and on big puzzles brute force is too slow.
Recognising structure beats grinding, especially as puzzles grow.
🧪 Try it! (2 minutes)
Take a puzzle you gave up on. Re-read it slowly, aloud, and find the word you misread. Try once more.
