Sound is vibration traveling through a material; faster vibration means a higher pitch.

Every sound starts as something vibrating — a string, your vocal cords, a speaker. The vibration pushes the air in waves that reach your ear. Faster vibrations make higher pitches; bigger vibrations make louder sounds. No material to vibrate, no sound — space is silent.
