Cratey the Honest Hamster

Cratey is a round, soft-cheeked little hamster, and he runs the friendliest crate stall in the whole meadow. He has warm brown fur, tiny paws, and cheek-pouches that puff out when he is happy - which is most of the time.

Cratey keeps a whole shelf of crates. Some hold red buttons. Some hold blue ribbons. Some hold a shiny golden star that only turns up once in a very long while. And every single crate has one special thing that makes Cratey’s stall the fairest stall of all.

Cratey paints the chances right on the lid.

Not hidden inside. Not whispered. Not a secret. Right on the TOP, out in the open, in soft coloured dots anyone can see. If a crate is mostly red buttons, the lid shows lots of little red dots. If the golden star is rare, the lid shows only one tiny gold dot, tucked among all the others. So before you ever lift a lid, you already know: “Ah - this one is mostly red. That gold star is not likely today.”

One morning a young hedgehog trots up, eyes wide. “Cratey! Which crate has the golden star? Just tell me the LUCKY one!”

Cratey does not lean in and murmur a secret. He never does. He taps the lid with a gentle paw and smiles. “Look right here,” he says warmly. “See the little dots? That is the chance, painted plain. This crate holds mostly reds, and only a whisper of gold. I would never hide that from you.”

The hedgehog studies the lid. “So… I probably won’t get gold?”

“Probably not today,” Cratey says kindly. “But now you KNOW - and knowing is a good, calm feeling, isn’t it? A fair crate never surprises you with a trick. It shows you the truth on the top.”

That is Cratey’s whole steady idea.

Put the chances right on the lid, where everyone can see.

A grown-up can play too! Find a small box with a lid. Drop in some things - say four red blocks and one gold one. Now, together, draw the chances right on the LID: four little red dots and one gold dot, plain to see. Look at the lid first. “Mostly red! Gold is rare.” THEN open and reach in. Did the lid tell the truth? A lid that shows its chances is an honest lid.

When the hedgehog finally opens the crate and finds a red button - exactly as the lid had promised - Cratey feels a warm, quiet gladness puff right up into his cheeks. Not because gold came. Because nothing was hidden. Because the little hedgehog knew the truth before she chose, and that is the kindest thing a crate can do.

“Chances on the lid,” Cratey says softly, tidying his shelf. “Out in the open. That is how we stay fair.”
