Oddo is a round, fluffy owl with big, calm, moon-round eyes. She sits on the fence-post right beside Cratey's crate stall, and she has one gentle job that she loves: Oddo reads the chance before anyone opens a crate.
You see, Cratey paints the chances on every lid in soft coloured dots. But some little friends look at all those dots and feel muddled. That is when Oddo tips her head, blinks her big eyes, and reads the lid out loud, slow and kind.
"Let me see," she hoots softly, peering at a lid. "Lots and LOTS of red dots... and just one tiny gold dot, all alone. So red is very likely. And gold? Gold is rare - it hardly ever comes."
A little mole shuffles up, blinking. "Oddo, I want the gold. Will I get it?"
Oddo does not promise. She never promises what she cannot know. Instead she points a soft feather-tip at the lonely gold dot. "Look how alone it is," she says warmly. "One little gold among all the reds. So the honest answer is: probably not this time. Gold is rare, small friend. But now you know what to expect - and that is a wise thing to know before you choose."
The mole thinks. "So I should expect a red?"
"You should expect a red," Oddo agrees, pleased. "Reading the chance FIRST is the smart, calm thing to do. Then, whatever pops out, you are ready. No big shock. No sting. Just: 'Ah - a red, like I expected.' Or, on a lucky day, 'Oh! The rare gold - what a treat!'"
That is Oddo's whole wise idea.
Read the chance first, THEN choose - lots of dots means likely, a lonely dot means rare.
A grown-up can play too! Set out a box with its chances drawn on the lid - maybe five red dots and one gold. Before you open, read it aloud together like Oddo: "Lots of red - LIKELY. One gold - RARE. I expect a red." Now open. Practise the feeling of expecting the likely thing and being surprised and glad by the rare one.
When the mole opens the crate and a red button rolls out - just as Oddo said to expect - the little mole does not feel disappointed at all. He grins. He KNEW. And Oddo puffs her chest, warm and satisfied, because a friend who reads the chance first is a friend who is never tricked and never stung.
"Read the chance first," Oddo hoots gently, settling her feathers. "Then you always know what to hope for - and what to just enjoy if it comes."
