Chapter 2 — Drip and the Patient Water

A week into the windowsill garden, the lettuce and carrots were finally sprouting — and Pot was killing them with love.

“Every day,” Pot said proudly, tipping the watering can, “because that’s what gardens do.”

Drip caught the can gently before it poured, and knelt beside the little pots. Drip pressed one finger an inch down into the soil, held it there, felt it. “Wet,” Drip said. “Way too wet. Don’t water today.”

Pot frowned. “But they look fine.”

“They look fine RIGHT NOW,” Drip said, patient as rain. “But roots that sit in soggy soil don’t drink — they drown. In three days the leaves would start to yellow. We’d think, ‘they need more water,’ and we’d give them more. And they’d die. Not from thirst. From kindness pointed the wrong way.”

Pot looked alarmed. “So what do we do?”

Drip held up the watering can and, for a moment, did the hardest thing a gardener ever does: nothing. “Stop watering for two days. Let the soil dry to just-damp. Then water deeply — really soak it — and wait again. And every single time, before you pour, do this.” Drip pressed a finger into the soil again. “Wet, don’t water. Damp, wait. Dry, water deep. The plant is telling us what it needs. We just have to listen with a finger instead of a calendar.”

Pot tried it — one finger, an inch down. “…Still damp.”

“Then we wait,” Drip said, and something in Pot’s shoulders settled, the way soil settles after a good rain.

Sprig the mentor smiled from the doorway. “Drip’s rule,” Sprig said quietly. “Right water is more loving than more water. The plant is patient. The whole craft is learning to be patient too — to trust that doing less, at the right time, is the most careful thing you can do.”

“Finger first. Water only when dry.”
